Becoming Our Best

A STEEP, WET HIKE BESIDE VERNAL FALLS

Yosemite National Park is now a favorite destination of people from all over the world. That means incredible crowds in the summer, with fewer people in spring and fall, and the least crowds of all in the winter rains and snow. I usually try to time my visit for mid-spring, when the waterfalls are running full and Yosemite Valley has fewer tourists.

Recently our nephew Walt and his son, Rob joined me for my annual trek up to experience the joy of Yosemite’s waterfalls at their best. The timing of our trip was based on Rob’s spring break, which was just about right for the maximum water flow over the falls. But my normal accommodation in the “tent cabins” hadn’t opened for the season yet. That meant either paying a lot of money to stay in the Park, or driving 30 minutes and staying outside. We chose the latter.

The day of our hike began with overcast skies, but we got an early start and saw very few people on the trails. One of my favorite trails still had too much snow cover, so we had to go up and down the Mist Trail beside Vernal Falls – a strenuous hike, with soaking spray from the falls drenching us, but beautiful, as the attached video shows. And the sun came out!

What could you and your team learn from our experience at Vernal Falls?

• Make plans to cover the eventualities, and stay flexible.
• Don’t be afraid to try something new – the video was my first try.
• Pace yourself. Going too fast at the beginning can cause problems later.
• Fully appreciate your experience, whether it’s painful or easy.

Sooner or later all of us get to steep and rough times in our lives Try using some of the thoughts above to help you and your team get through your challenges in the best, most productive way possible.
